Filter media are materials that allow the passage of raw water through them and retain particulate material, these are selected according to desired physical characteristics, such as specific size, gravity and particle size.

Filtration through a filter bed is a widely used technique for the removal of particles contained in water, its main applications are in drinking water treatment and water purification.

There is a wide variety of water filter media used in filters and softeners. 

They are also placed in a fiberglass tank or in a cartridge in order to treat the water passing through them and achieve some objective. Among the main water filter media are zeolite, activated carbon, cationic resin, silica gravel, salt pellets, etc. which we will describe below.
